Are you using a VHF radio? Are you becoming a sailing instructor? Are you driving the club tender or working for the Coast Guard? Are you working or volunteering on races and regattas? Do you want to be able to make an emergency call or know how to use the DSC feature on your radio? Or just want to use a VHF Radio and don’t know what the red emergency button really is or how to make a bridge to bridge contact on Channel 70? Knowing how to use the radio properly might save your life or very much help with a rescue and everyone on board should know how to use it properly. If you answered yes to any of these then you really need to have your Restricted Operators Certificate. It is actually illegal to operate a VHF radio without certification and can result in a heavy fine. Once certified, you are certified for life! No need to renew.
