Visually Impaired Sailor Competes at Sail East Regatta

Opti Sailor Nick Gentleman from the Hubbards Sailing Club became the first visually impaired sailor to compete in a dinghy regatta in Nova Scotia.
Nick, who suffers from a condition known as "feber" is 12 years old and has been sailing with his family for a number of years now. He first enrolled in sailing lessons when he was 8 but Bay Wind / Sail East was his first regatta experience.
He competed in the Opti Green fleet and while there were challenges he admits it was a lot of fun
'I couldn't see the race marks until I got close to them so I followed others and then when I saw the mark I went off on my own before picking up others again"
"When the regatta finished I was really proud of myself. I can't wait to get out there and do some more racing!"
Next up for Nick is the Opti Provincial Championship to be held at his home club in September.
After his year in the Opti he and his coach Jim Schwartz are looking at the 420 in 2015.
