May 28 COVID-19 Update For Sailors and Boaters

Today the province announced its Re-Opening Plan when it comes to easing COVID-19 restrictions. This plan takes effect on June 2, 2021 at 8am.

The easing of restrictions on June 2 as they pertain to sailing and boating programs are:

1 - Outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people with no social distancing. This allows sailing and boating with up to 10 people.

2 - There is no change to the indoor gathering limits ie. the people you live with or if you live alone you can visit one other household.

3 - Training / Practice can resume provided groups, including the coach/instructor are no more than 10 people in the group. If two groups they must remain distanced.

4 - Competition / Regattas are currently not permitted. In the Re-Opening Plan, you will see competition can take place only once the province reaches Phase 3. In their news briefing this afternoon the Province announced they expect to be in Phase 3 around July 1.

5- Travel is still restricted into and out of HRM and CBRM. This restriction is to be lifted the morning of June 1, 2021.

Up until June 2 the following restrictions are in place

The current Provincial Health Restrictions forbid competition including regattas and sail training of any kind to take place. However, owners can prepare, launch and use their boats at this time.

When preparing and launching your boat you must follow all COVID-19 protocols such as socially distance at all times, wear a mask, regularly clean all high touch surfaces, and do not travel to your club if it is outside your municipality.

You can find the current Provincial COVID-19 Regulations here including travel to Nova Scotia and gathering limits.

Sport-specific restrictions can be found on the Sport Nova Scotia website here.

Sail Nova Scotia remains hopeful that sailing clubs, schools, and programs including regattas will be able to operate this summer.

We will follow the situation closely and regularly connect with our Government contacts for updates.

If you or your club have any questions about the situation, please reach out to Frank Denis, Sail Nova Scotia Executive Director at [email protected]

Note: I recognize the photo is not the most COVID-19 friendly one, but the day is coming when raft-up parties will be back in style!
