The team of Karen Fowler, Leanne Gillis, Sarah Crutcher, and Christina Scarfe competed in the middle of August at the annual National Women's Keelboat Championships and finished in 10th place in the 11 boat fleet.
The regatta was held at the Pointe Claire Yacht Club in Montreal and sailed in Shark 24s, a boat the team was not used to.
Skipper Karen Fowler said this about the team's experience at the regatta; "The experience was fabulous. PCYC was incredibly welcoming & accomModating. The RC did a stellar job banging off 3 races everyday. They had Shark racers on the water giving us trimming tips. It was a tight fleet by day 2. Such a good experience sailing one design with this calibre of sailors...raising our bar! Our training day saw +18kts with rain. Fri & sat were 8-14kts with sunny periods & Sunday was 15-20kts, big gusts & building all day, rain on & off. Everyone was glad to see a team from NS had made the effort to be there. I really think it is important to have at least one team from here attend yearly....would love to see 2 or 3 teams heading to this event." One of the legacies of hosting the 2013 event is Nova Scotia now has funding to support teams to travel to the Nationals every year. If you're interested, contact Sail Nova Scotia.
