All instructors must take the Sail Canada LTSD on-line module. Free and takes about 45 minutes. Click here

 

 

 

To become a certified Sail Canada sailing instructor you must complete the following 4 components:
1 - Tune Up/Pro D weekend
2 - Sailing Fundamental Course (theory in the classroom)
3 - Technical Course (on-water coaching)
4 - In-field Evaluation (real setting evaluation of coaching skills)

You must complete the Tune Up Day and Fundamental Course (in any order) prior to attending the Technical Course.

Tune Up / Professional Development Weekend 
This weekend is a way for the Learning Facilitators to ensure that you can still sail at the pre-requisite level (CANSail4 for CANSail 1&2 instructorss, and CANSail 5 for CANSail 3&4 instructors). You'll also received professional development training in Safety, Running an Effective Program and more.
All candidates must attend the weekend. 

Fundamental Course
The Sailing Fundamental Course is the new Theory component designed specifically for sailing coaches and instructors. Provincial Sailing Associations are the only organizations to offer this course.  This course never expires and is the foundation for all Sail Canada Instructor courses.

Technical Course
This 4 day course is where your dryland and on-water coaching skills are evaluated by the Learning Facilitators.

CANSail 1 & 2 Coach Level

Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will be a trained Sail Canada CANSail 1&2 Instructor qualified to teach up to the CANSail 2 level. Trained status expires two years after the clinic and if you would like to continue to teach sailing, you will be need to successfully complete an evaluation of your CANSail coaching skills with a certified Sail Canada Learning Facilitator.

Pre-Requisites

- Minimum of 16 years of age before teaching
- First Aid; Effective 2018 all instructors must have at least Standard First Aid level. Emergency First Aid level is only acceptable for those who took the course in 2015 or earlier. If you need to re-certify take the Standard First Aid course.
- Coach Boat Safety Course.
This course is only offered by a few people in the province and will be scheduled for May and June. Usually takes a day and half to complete and teaches people how to operate a coach boat safely, perform a rescue in a boat, tow boats, etc. Very useful course. 2017 Course details here. http://www.sailnovascotia.ca/events-listing.html  See May 27-28 & June 17-18.
- Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card - MUST HAVE BEFORE START OF COURSE 
- CANSail 4 Sailing Certificate - MUST HAVE  BEFORE START OF COURSE

- Sail Canada Long Term Sailor Development on-line module. Takes about 45 minutes to complete on-line. Free. 

Certification Requirements

- Successful completion of the Make Ethical Decisions online evaluation found athttp://nccpeval.coach.ca/production/med/e/default.asp
- Successful completion of the White Sail Coach evaluation with a certified Sail Canada Evaluator

CANSail 3 & 4 Coach Level

Upon successful completion of this level, candidates will be trained (qualified) to teach CANSail 3 & 4 levels. Trained status expires two years after the clinic and if you would like to continue to teach sailing, you will be need to successfully complete an evaluation of your coaching skills with a certified Sail Canada Learning Facilitator.
New for 2015: If you do not have your CANSail 1-2 Instructor level and you take this course you can take the first weekend of a 1-2 course so you can also teach those levels.

Community Instructor Level  
There are the community leaders or parents that may not have the required skill level, time, or desire to become a CANSail1 & 2 instructor but are interested in becoming involved. They often want to develop some skills to assist entry level sailors, and would like to be able to offer a certification level. Most live in a community with a shortage of trained CANSail instructors. Candidates who successfully complete this course with the pre-reqs will be able to certify at the CANSail 1 level and will be able to register with Sail Canada, which includes instructor liability insurance.
